The following projects are representative of Athena's environmental sediment sampling capabilities.
2002-2011
Sediment Characterization Studies, Little Creek, Virginia
Athena has a decade of experience performing vibracore and sedimetn sampling studies at Joint Expeditionary Base, Little Creek. The data collected by Athena has been a valuable of component in the decision making process for both remediation and dredging projects.
The projects required flexibility in sampling strategies in order deal with many of the unknowns encountered on site and provide our client with maximum effectiveness during coring. Athena also provided vessel services including water sampling, sediment grab sampling and basic bathymetry during the projects.
2006
ENVIRONMENTAL SEDIMENT CHARACTERIZATION, CALCASIEU RIVER, LOUSIANA
Athena was contracted to collect core samples along 98 transects along the Calcasieu River. The cores were part of an environmental sediment assessment that included testing physical properties, sediment chemistry parameters (metals, pesticides, PCBs, etc.), elutriate, and bioassay/bioaccumulation analyses.
The project required working over an area 30 miles long with little easily accessible shore support. This made planning vital to running a smooth and efficient project, especially considering the sensitivity related to limited sample hold times mandated by laboratory specifications.
