Modern Clastic Depositional Environments Field Course

Dr. Walter Sexton and the staff at Athena have been teaching a week-long field seminar on  “Modern Clastic Depositional Environments” since the company's inception.  These seminars have been taught for both the ground water and petroleum industries as well as for academic institutions. The field seminars have been taught on the South Carolina and Alaska coastlines and are designed to instruct the geoscientist in the sedimentological character of modern depositional environments as they relate to ancient clastic depositional systems.  Some of the depositional environments studied during these seminars are fluvial systems, river deltas, barrier islands, tidal deltas, estuaries, marshes, freshwater swamps, etc.  The seminars are designed to expose the student to as many depositional settings as possible through slide presentations and hands-on experience in the field.  This new knowledge will enable the scientist to make more accurate interpretations and predictions of both vertical and lateral sediment sequences that might affect reservoir trends (permeability and porosities) and types of stratigraphic traps.  Athena has taught the seminars for:

American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

National Ground Water Association (NGWA)

Schlumberger Offshore Services

BP America

RPS Group

Conoco/Phillips Petroleum

Chesapeake Energy Company

Shell Oil Company

Apache Corporation
